I want to take this opportunity to share how important the School of Mangement’s location on the Auke Bay campus is to me as a faculty member.  In contrast, the Bill Ray Center is located in a high traffic, congested area with views of a parking lot and a gas station. I worry that the move would negatively impact our ability to recruit top notch faculty and students to our programs; imagine how different the guided tour would be.

A large part of my decision to leave a higher paying job with the State was getting to be part of a tight-knit university community. This includes being able to easily participate in campus activities, committee work, and develop professional relationships with other faculty and administrators on campus. I feel that all of this would be more difficult if the School of Management was located 11 miles across town at the Bill Ray Center. I also worry that a move downtown would limit our access to classrooms and support services such as the Learning and Testing Center, the Egan Library, the Recreation Center and the employee wellness program.

Marine Transportation classes have some external regulatory rqmnts that I wanted to make sure are considered in the plan (in particular relocating MT classes from the Bill Ray Center).  The U.S. Coast Guard requires 36 sq ft /student plus 75sq ft for the instructor.  A few of our classes can have up to 24 students so we would need a classroom of at least 987 sq ft available.  I also need large tables in my classroom for navigation charts.  I also have significant storage requirements for training equipment (rafts, immersion suits, life jackets, etc).  I'm currently using about 150 sq ft.

This would be a problem if the Bill Ray Center is closed before replacement classroom space is found/constructed.  Thanks.
