The overall aim of this lab is to understand the behavior and ecology of marine mammals, and their role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. A wide network of collaborators, undergraduates, and graduate students are involved in projects related to this theme. Click on the links to the right to learn more about current research and students.

If you are a prospective student, please read through the project descriptions on this website. Also review the admission requirements to the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences:  https://www.uaf.edu/sfos/academics/apply/. I do not currently have funding to support additional students. However, highly talented students may be able to obtain their own funding so please contact me if you are interested.

Duskies really are the master acrobats of the sea!

Today brought lots of sun and clear skies, but also a lot of wind. Our morning check of the water showed that it was too windy for us to go out on our research boat. The Dolphin Encounter tour boat also did not go out this morning. So, we spent the morning getting caught up on our data and other work, and then checked the weather again at noon. The winds had calmed a bit, but it was still too windy for our boat. Dolphin Encounter, however, was going out, and they had 2 spots open for Adrian and me.

It only took us about 30 minutes to reach the large dusky pod. They were just outside our study area. We spent about an hour and a half with the group and collected our behavioral and photo-id data. It was a different, but neat, perspective for us to view the duskies from a high vantage point on a larger vessel. It was a worthwhile trip, and fun for me to spend some time taking photos of the duskies’ acrobatic antics after we were done collecting our research photos. The duskies never disappoint!
