UAS FH Construction Update for 12/06/2013
Red Iron is Up!
This week the Contractor finished setting all of the Red Iron. The area between Resident Hall I and Resident Hall II is called the commons area. The commons area includes a lobby and reception area on the first floor, laundry and mechanical rooms on the second floor, large common living room and kitchen on the third floor, class room and study area on the fourth floor. With all the Red Iron up, you can see the full height of the Freshman Residence Hall.
Someone asked me last week why it’s called “Red Iron” I was hoping to dig up some obscure structural engineering reason for the name. But, it is called “Red Iron” because they paint the steel with red iron oxide primer paint at the factory to keep it from rusting. Like many things in life, it’s not very glamorous, but it works.
The Contractor worked much of the Thanksgiving weekend, putting up more Cold Formed Steel and was able to get the second floor up on Residence Hall II. I like this stage of construction because it is so easy to see progress.
