Regional Science Fair Judges Needed
The SE AK REgional Science Fair is looking for 130 judges (we have 50 people signed up) for our high school fair on Saturday, March 12 ( from 8-noon) at Marie Drake Gym in downtown Juneau.
The majority of the students involved are freshman and sophomores from ThunderMt and JDHS who are participating as part of their science class requirements.
This year we also have students from Skagway, Sitka and Yaakoosge High School in Juneau.
About half of the projects are the student's first attempt at learning the fundamentals of the scientific process.
All projects are mentor assisted and adhere to strict guidelines and protocols for safety.
Top projects selected from this fair will go to LA to participate at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in May (http://www.societyforscience.org/intelisef2011),
with 1600 other high school students from over 60 countries.
The projects at our fair cover a wide range of topics including but not, limited to: fisheries, engineering, cooking, botany, chemistry, earth science, health, physics and psychology.,
The judging obligation involves:
1.Judge's training/overview (30 minutes given twice on Friday night and again on Sat morning at 7:30 am),
2. Project preview (without the students 8-9 am on Sat),
3. Project judging (9-11 am - judges will evaluate each of their 4 projects for 30 minutes by interviewing the students and filling out score sheet,
4. Judge caucusing where judges get together with the 3 other people who have also judged the same projects they have and decide if any of their projects should advance to,the "second tier round" which is held on Sunday which determines who will participate at the International Fair in California.
We provide beverages, food, clipboards, pencils, score sheets, helpful
hints about judging and a time to interact with eager science students and your peers.
Judges are matched to projects with their interest/expertise (if possible).
If you are interested, please send email@example.com an email so I can put you on the list!
If you know of anyone else who may be interested, please forward this to them ESPECIALLY YOUR STUDENTS
This will probably be the last year we have a large scale fair (130-140 projects). 3/4 of the projects are completed as
part of a class requirement and next year students in those classes will be required to do other projects. So, we aren't sure
that we will even have a regional science again for awhile.
Thanks for considering this volunteer opportunity.,
If you need more info, please let me know.
