Belize summer course, geology scholarships, NASA internship

Belize Summer Course Geology Scholarships  NASA Internship

Belize Summer Course
I am a professor of environmental soil science in the Department of Agronomy and Soils at Auburn University. For the past 20 years I have taught and done research regarding carbon and nutrient cycling in managed and natural ecosystems around the world. I have akeen interest in how land management impacts ecosystem carbon sequestration.  One of the places I am working is in Belize.

In that regard,I am now working with the Institute for Sustainable International Studies(ISIS) to offer two courses that will examine agro-ecosystems, including topics such as land management impacts, watershed issues, carbon cycling and carbon sequestration in Belizean soils. The courses are:
•       Watershed Ecology in Agricultural Landscapes
•       Soils & Agro-systems of the Belize River Valley

The courses will include some classroom time, some field time, and some laboratory time. Both courses will be taught in conjunction with Dr. Ed Boles, an aquatic ecologist with years of experience in Belize. These courses are relevant to undergraduate students interested in agriculture, soil science, and ecology. This is an excellent opportunity for students to earn college credit, gain valuable practical experience in the field, and experience the rich culture and ecology of Belize.

Our two courses will be taught from June 30 – July 28.  They are part of a number of courses being offered this summer during two sessions over June and July. The courses are described in more detail in the attachedflyer.  Students take two intensive courses over the period of one month.  The fee for the four week program is $3,975, which includes tuition, field trips, housing and localtransportation.  A single two week course is $2,500.Please circulate this flyer to others who may havean interest in soil science, tropical agriculture, watershed ecology or environmental science. The syllabi are available online at

There are also opportunities with ISIS for faculty to teach or bringtheir own student groups to Belize and internships for students are available.  I will be happy to answer anyacademic or professional questions you have, so please feel free to emailme, CynthiaReece, our Program Manager with ISIS, will respond to questions related tohousing, travel planning, course costs, and custom programs,

NASA Internship

I am pleased to announce the launch of the 2012 NASA / Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) application. It is online and available at
Since 2004, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) has offered summer projects to students interested in working on NASA missions or space-related research opportunities at APL. Students participating in the NASA/APL Internship Program will work at APL, and will make critical contributions to current and future missions or grants during their assignments in the Space Department. The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a not-for-profit center for engineering, research and development. APL is a division of one of the world's premier research universities, Johns Hopkins. The 399-acre campus, 20 miles north of Washington, DC, is home to 4,100 men and women who work on more than 400 programs that protect our homeland and advance the nation's vision in research and space science. or
Below are relevant deadlines.

    * November 15, 2012 - Application Launched
    * January 17, 2012 - Application Deadline
    * End of February - Selections Complete

Students participating in the NASA/APL Internship Program must:

    * have a demonstrated interest in the space program
    * be a sophomore, junior, senior, or first or second year graduate student in Fall 2012
    * be in high academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or greater)
    * be a U.S. citizen

Recruitment and Posters
Space Grants act as one of our primary recruitment sources. Your connection to STEM students serves as a vital source for the NASA/APL internship. Would you be able to continue to advertise these programs to your universities and student groups? To assist, I have attached posters suitable for email recruitment. Additionally, you may find larger version of these posters, suitable for print, at
Thank you,
