The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is looking for university students interested in applying for a summer intern position. The position will be administered through the Public Works, Streets & Fleet Maintenance Division and will involve the GNSS measurement of various CBJ assets such as streets signs, curb drains, drainage culverts, light poles, etc. These GNSS data will be incorporated into the CBJ’s GIS. Supervision of field work and technical assistance will be provided by the CBJ’s GIS Department.
Applicants must be actively enrolled as full-time students in a degree program.
Students must be familiar with and have experience using GNSS mapping grade equipment.
Must have a current Alaska State driver’s license and a safe driving
Specific Job Description
Various CBJ owned assets will be measured utilizing a Trimble GeoXT 6000 GNSS collection unit. The desired precisions for this project are sub-meter. Data collect will provide X,Y, and Z coordinates that will be post-processed utilizing Trimble Pathfinder software, and then exported to shapefile format suitable for integration to ESRI ArcMap 10.1 and, ultimately, to the CBJ’s GIS.
Driving, frequently getting in and out of a vehicle, and reporting weekly to the MIS Department for data delivery are required. Work will be outdoors and students must be prepared for inclement weather conditions including but not limited to wind, rain, and sleet. Many locations will involve working in a high vehicular traffic environment. Use of high visibility safety vests is compulsory. It is preferred/required students work in teams of two for safety reasons.
It is expected that two full-time 37.5 hour positions will be available for the 2017 summer. Pay rate is $16.64 per hour. Intern positions are expected to terminate in late August or early September, but hours still may be available after the 2017 fall semester begins.
