Graduate Assistantship in GIS & Traditional Ecological Knowledge, UAF

*Graduate student funding available for 2-year community-based marine conservation project*

University of Alaska and Bristol Bay Native Association are collaborating on a project, "Building capacity for community-based marine mammal management in Bristol Bay." The objective of our project is to document the ways in which marine mammal ecology and harvesting patterns among hunters in two Bristol Bay communities and one Alaska Peninsula community have changed through time. We will achieve this documentation and analysis through a traditional ecological knowledge project using in-depth qualitative interviews emphasizing historical patterns of subsistence use and marine mammal distributions in addition to real-time boat surveys and GIS technology to map important contemporary marine mammal habitat features and particular sites of importance for subsistence.

We are recruiting a research assistant, beginning Fall 2012, to assist in multiple facets of the project: interview protocol design, coordinating with village research assistants, compiling and analyzing prior available data, and in-depth traditional knowledge interviews. A PhD or masters student in the social sciences or an applied conservation field is preferred, although promising students in other fields will be considered. Experience with GIS is preferred, as is experience in working in Alaska Native villages and local knowledge of the Bristol Bay region.

The assistantship covers graduate tuition and a living stipend plus health insurance and limited benefits. Student must be a current UAF graduate student or be accepted into a graduate program at UAF to receive the assistantship (full application due before June 1, 2012).

To apply, please send a cover letter indicating your interest and experience, a 2-page CV, and the names of two references to:

Dr. Chanda Meek at UAF via email: clmeek@alaska.edu or mail: PO Box 756420, Fairbanks, AK 99775 USA.

*The position will be open until filled.
